Spotlight on Classroom Programs
One particularly useful approach that Ms. Davis employed was the "question of the day."
She crafted several questions which she wrote on the board for students to answer as
they came into the class. Some of the questions served to assess knowledge (for example,
"What's your favorite color in Latin?" or "How old are you in Roman numerals?") and other
questions would focus more on Latin as a language (for example, "What was the best part
of being a Roman?, "Why is Latin dead? Why is Latin not dead?," and "Who speaks
Latin?"). These questions allowed Ms. Davis to explore what her students thought about
Latin and how their opinions changed.

The main goal of the program is to introduce Latin to students who otherwise would not
have been exposed to it, and to get them interested in it. Dozens of parents and students
are a testament to Ms. Davis' success -- they often express to her how the class got them
thinking about Latin and wanting to know more. Ms. Davis provided these students with
fun experiences regarding Latin, helping to dispel the myth that Latin is boring and
outdated. Because of Ms. Davis's initiative in beginning the first Latin program in her
district, and for her use of methods that truly appeal to elementary school students, we
are proud to spotlight her and her work here in Prima.
