Call for Papers for the Second Annual Undergraduate Panel
Theme: Homer and the Homeric World
The One Hundred and First meeting of the Ohio Classical Conference, to be held at Columbus Academy, in Gahanna, Ohio on October 14th, 2023, invites submissions for its second annual Ohio-wide undergraduate panel! This year's theme is Homer. Papers might address any topic related to the Homeric poems themselves or to their importance for later ancient literature, such as ancient tragedy and philosophy.
Alternatively, papers might address bronze-age society, relevant archaeological questions, or the reception of Homer in the ancient or modern world, for instance: the possibilities are nearly endless! Papers should be no more than 1,500 words (or 10 minutes) in length and should be interesting to a broad audience, including high school students.
Four papers will be chosen for this hour-long panel: under the auspices of an undergraduate moderator, each presenter will speak for 10 minutes and field questions for five more minutes. Any undergraduate student of classics, ancient history, ancient philosophy, or archaeology presently studying in Ohio is eligible to submit a paper.
Submissions must be in the form of a complete draft of the paper and must be submitted to Professor Edith Foster (efoster@wooster.edu). The deadline is Friday, May 26th, 2023. Papers selected for the panel will usually need to be revised one or two more times in order to ensure that they become high quality presentations.
The full conference includes a keynote speech, a Latin 'ovatio', a Vergilian luncheon address, a staged reading of an ancient Greek or Roman play, and other panels, potentially including an Eta Sigma Phi event. Students who attended last year's meeting reported that it was both stimulating and fun. The OCC will provide breakfast, lunch, and an afternoon snack, which you can consume while connecting with other Ohio classics students and professors. We invite all undergraduates in classics and related fields to plan to attend the meeting!
